New for 2017

Dodge has added a new T/A variant to the 2017 Challenger lineup, bringing standard 20-inch alloy wheels, Satin Black exterior graphics, Brembo brakes, sport seats, a modified directed cold-air hood system, a cold-air induction system, and “Air Catcher” headlights inspired by the Challenger SRT Hellcat. FCA’s fourth-generation Uconnect infotainment system has also been added, and it now comes with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration. All Challengers equipped with the 5.7-liter V-8 now comes with an active exhaust as standard. The signature Houndstooth cloth upholstery now comes standard on the SXT, R/T, R/T Shaker, and the R/T Scat Pack models. SRT variants now come standard with lightweight 20-inch alloy wheels, and an illuminated steering wheel in red (Hellcat) or white (SRT 392). Four new exterior colors—Green Go, Yellow Jacket, Destroyer Grey, and Octane Red—have been added to the lineup.

In addition to the new Uconnect infotainment system, the 2017 Challenger is also available with adaptive cruise control, blind spot warning, a rearview camera, a customizable digital cluster display, a Harman/Kardon audio system, leather upholstery, heated/ventilated front seats, keyless entry/start, and remote start. The Super Track Pak that’s available in the SXT Plus adds 20-inch alloy wheels, a 3.07 rear axle ratio, performance-tuned steering and suspension, and paddle shifters.

What We Think

In a 2015 Challenger SXT Plus First Test, we said that the car’s cabin has been nicely updated as part of its facelift, featuring good quality materials and soft sport seats. Even when it’s powered by the standard 305-hp 3.6-liter V-6 and eight-speed automatic, the Challenger accelerates well. While it does handle well especially with the Super Track Pak, the V-6-powered Challenger is more of a composed grand tourer. FCA’s Uconnect infotainment system is easy to use and straightforward. Visibility, on the other hand, is limited due to the car’s massive C-pillar.
Should you be looking for a good muscle car bargain, the Challenger R/T Scat Pack, which has a 485-hp 6.4-liter V-8, offers strong acceleration and a bunch of go-fast goodies except for the SRT 392’s adaptive suspension. In a 2015 First Test, we said that the R/T Scat Pack offers exceptional acceleration and handles well despite its curb weight of over two tons. The brakes, however, didn’t prove up to the task because they faded quickly when pushed hard.
In case the R/T Scat Pack and the SRT 392 aren’t fast enough for you, the 707-hp Challenger SRT Hellcat comes with 707 hp. We said in a 2015 First Test that the Hellcat will easily do a big smoky burnout, and will do it “better than any other new car.” While it does handle well, this is more of a straight-line bandit than a car for attacking autocrosses and road courses.

Safety

NHTSA gave the 2017 Dodge Challenger a five-star overall safety rating (out of a possible five stars). In IIHS evaluations, the Challenger received an Acceptable score in the roof strength and head restraints and seat categories, Good in the side impact and moderate front overlap tests, and Marginal in the small front overlap evaluation (Good is the highest possible score). The car also received a Basic score in the IIHS’ front crash prevention test. Although it doesn’t have automatic emergency braking, it offers a forward collision warning system, which is part of the Technology group.

Cool Fact

The Challenger SRT Hellcat’s inner driver’s side headlight is hollowed out and used as an air intake hole to funnel air into the engine.
